Team Work
After initial training, we were interviewed by MKS and allotted to different departments. I wanted to join the Production shops, but my not knowing Tamil language was quoted as a problem. MKS wanted me to join either Engineering or R&D which I was not interested in. The next alternative was to join Production Engineering and be close to production so I opted for the same.
Myself, AKS, JM Ghosh and TVK were posted in the OP&C section of Production Engineering while PK Sinha was posted in the PP&C section. Mr Venkateswaran headed the Production Engineering department. Mr Guruswami headed OP&C Tubular Products. He was assisted by CR Sankaran and Avtar kishen Jafrani. Mr P. Ramakrishnan headed OP&C RM that included Material preparation bay, MSTR and Training centre workshop in addition to Rotating machines and structure/ NPP. S Balakrishnan was senior engineer attached to Mr P Ramakrishnan and he was responsible for plan preparations & distribution, convening review meetings and distribution of MOMs for the entire Production Engineering department. AN Jagadeeswaran, R Sridhar (Jiggy), Sivakumar and Dwivedi were in OP&C PFP. Mr MA Ragavan headed OP&C MSTR section. KMV Veerai headed PP&C. KM Somasundaram was a manager in the department. Ramadurai looked after OP&C Nuclear.
K Rajakumar was the Works manager. Later on promotion, he was transferred to the Parli 3 turnkey project. VG Jagannath was Manager BPN, V Ramanathan was Manager TPN.
I was given the responsibility of Fuel firing systems that included Coal burners, Oil systems and Recovery systems. In addition to this the Training centre workshop was also attached. Refuse of all sections was loaded on the Training centre workshop. These included the condensing loops, sampling coolers, silencers and mitre bends. In addition to this Constant Load Hangers and Variable load hangers were assembled in the Training centre. Springs were manufactured under the guidance of one person who had joined from Golden Rock railway workshop.
Ashwani and Datta prasad joined the Material planning department headed by Devraj. Dexter Almeida was a senior engineer in material planning.
G Premkumar was my counterpart in Bay 9 manufacturing wind box assemblies. Robi Das, though didn't know Tamil, was posted to MSTR.
After joining OP&C , the first hurdle was to understand the material codes then used in drawings and SPL. BMC10, BMC40 or BMDS specifications didn't convey any meaningful information. These material codes were made to go away when we started manufacture of Libya and Malaysia projects. Lloyds would insist on putting national/ international specifications. Their contention was BMC20 doesn't specify whether it is structural steel or pressure part steel. IS 2002 vs 2062.
OP&C was required assign work centre numbers to DU/ Part on SPL (Summary Part List) and send it to EDP. Based on that input indents would be generated for Subcontracting department and blue prints of drawings and documents would be sent by documentation centre of Engineering. MRS/ CRS would also be generated and sent to material planning.
Product engineering was supposed to material forecast and indents for DD/ sub delivery items. Fuel Firing & Instrumentation engineering always forgot to send material forecast. Ashwani would accompany me to Engineering and ask them ( Chandrashekhar and Jaffer Ali) to accept substitute material in the absence of material forecasts. After GM was transferred to FES, GV Raman was heading both Coal burners and Oil systems. We went to him for acceptance of ERW tubes and forged elbows from the Press shop. We had taken a sample of the forged elbow with us. GV Raman did all the calculations, told us about Reynolds number etc. After calculations, he found that the required tube thickness is less than a mm. He had no choice but to accept ERW tubes for yard pipelines. He accepted the forged elbow also. After that I had to take our batchmate R Sridhar (German), who was in Stores inspection and collect cutbits of pipes to get them forged. He would give the material test certificate for the cutbits. German was very useful in locating components in stores for the already closed work orders.
With close cooperation we were able to complete supply for many customers
